FAQs
- Q Is Nu-Wool Insulation environmentally friendly? Is it a “green product”?
- A Yes, very much so. Nu-Wool recycles over 150 tons of used newsprint every day. No energy is wasted during the production of the insulation either. When production is ended the motors are shut off, unlike the manufacture of fiberglass that requires furnaces to remain constantly hot. This is referred to as "embodied energy". You could say we were green before Kermit the Frog was even a tadpole!
- Q What is the R-value of Nu-Wool Insulation?
- A Nu-Wool Premium Cellulose Insulation has an R-value of 13 in 2x4 wall construction and R 21 in a 2x6 wall. Because of Nu-Wool’s superior ability to reduce air infiltration, a 2x4 wall filled with Nu-Wool will perform (measured in energy usage) as if it had an R-value of 17, while a 2x6 wall with Nu-Wool will perform like an R 25 wall. We call this performance "Effective R-value".
- Q What is Nu-Wool Insulation made from?
- A Nu-Wool Premium Cellulose Insulation is made from at least 85% (by weight) recycled newsprint and the remainders a borate formulation for fire resistance along with an EPA registered fungicide.
- Q How can I find an installer in my area?
- A Please go to the "Find a dealer" section of our web site.
- Q How much does it cost?
- A Because each area of the country has a slightly different economy and each project is different it is best to contact a local installer for pricing information on your particular project.
- Q What is "R-Value"?
- A The measure of the resistance of a material to heat flow. The higher the number, the greater the resistance to heat flow. R-value does not measure air infiltration.
- Q Is Nu-Wool Insulation fire resistant?
- A Use of a 100% borate formulation makes Nu-Wool Premium Cellulose Insulation a class I fire rated building material. In fact it is used in over 40 different UL listed firewalls. That fire resistance is permanent as tested by such agencies as Oakridge National Laboratory.
- Q Will Nu-Wool Insulation make my home quieter?
- A Yes. The high density and ability to fill in around obstructions give Nu-Wool Premium Cellulose Insulation a superior advantage over fiberglass and foam materials. Your Certified Nu-Wool WALLSEAL Dealer can also insulate interior walls and floors in your new home, greatly reducing sound transmission.
- Q Is Nu-Wool Insulation safe for my family?
- A Today's news print is made with soy based inks and the borate fire retardants used in Nu-Wool Premium Cellulose Insulation also used in eye wash and laundry detergent. In fact, Nu-Wool is used in the American Lung Associations Health House Program.
- Q Does Nu-Wool Insulation settle?
- A When Nu-Wool Premium Cellulose Insulation is dry blown into open attics the insulation will settle. Through continuous testing we know how much a given depth of insulation will settle before it reaches its final depth. With the use of the coverage chart printed on every bag the right amount of product can be calculated to obtain the final depth that you want. In walls, Nu-Wool WALLSEAL properly installed at a density of at least 3.0 lbs. per cubic foot will not settle.
